In this exclusive review we take a closer look at the new Snap Server 410 which targets workgroups and small businesses looking for an affordable network storage solution with room to expand. The 410 is the final piece of the Snap Server jigsaw as Adaptec launched its 500 series of mid-range appliances back in March and followed them up with the entry-level 110 and 210 desktop units a few months later.

A new class of performance The Snap Server 410 combines a powerful high-performance processing platform with the functionality of Snap Server GuardianOS. It outperforms all other networked storage alternatives in its class. Monitoring and control made simple With legendary Snap Server ease of use and management, the Snap Server 410 installs in just minutes, and is virtually maintenance-free after installation. It integrates seamlessly into Windows, Linux, UNIX, and Apple environments. Snap Server makes it simple for anyone to manage a single Snap Server or all the Snap Servers in an organization. One server unifying data types With Snap Servers, you can easily store database, email, and file-level data on a single server. The iSCSI support option in the GuardianOS platform allows you to securely manage, store, and distribute block data across your Ethernet network using industry-standard iSCSI initiators. Choose the data protection you need The Snap Server 410 provides RAID 0 (data striping), RAID 1 (mirroring), and RAID 5 (striping with parity). It has an integrated WorkGroup Edition of BakBone NetVault with a 500GB Virtual Tape Library license and has the ability to integrate with many popular backup applications. Choose from options including CA e Trust Antivirus data protection software and snapshot capability for backup. Take your solution further with disaster recovery using StorAssure Personal Edition for automated backup of desktop and laptop systems, or Snap Enterprise Data Replicator (Snap EDR). The 410 can then be seen as a NetVault client allowing its volumes to be selected and backed up. The appliance's motherboard also sports a couple of PCI slots for additional SCSI controllers but don't even think about providing your own as the appliance will only work with Adaptec's upgrade card. This is an elderly Ultra2 LSI Logic dual channel card and Adaptec charges a hefty 150 for the privilege. Nevertheless, with this in place we were able to declare the tape drive to NetVault and remotely run backup jobs that secured data on the appliance directly to the tape drive. Adaptec's Snap EDR (enterprise data replicator) software option makes the Snap Servers stand out from the crowd as this allows appliances in remote locations to have selected shares synchronised with other systems. You can distribute files from one source to multiple locations, aggregate files from multiple appliances to a single location and replicate files and folders between one source and one target. Usefully, Adaptec also offers agents for Windows and Linux systems allowing them to be included in the replication tasks.Virtual volumes are easy enough to set up but make sure you use a separate volume for them as they cannot be included in snapshots or backed up locally by NetVault. Creating targets is a simple job as you select a volume, enter a capacity for the target and activate CHAP authentication for improved security. Anti-virus measures are also on the options menu and these come courtesy of Computer Associates and its eTrust AntiVirus. This doesn't cost much to activate but no real-time scanning is provided. On-demand scans can be scheduled at regular intervals and this is achieved from the separate eTrust interface that is fired up automatically from the main management console.

The 410 enjoys the full benefit of Adaptec's GuardianOS operating system which brings in a good range of features and plenty of optional upgrades. The 410 is presented in a slim-line 1U rack chassis which delivers a good hardware specification and a spare SO-DIMM slot on the motherboard allows the base memory to be upgraded to a total of 2GB. Noise pollution is a big issue in small offices and, although it's not something you'd want near your desk, the 410 is reasonably quiet. Installation is easy enough and there are two options as you can point a web browser at its DHCP assigned IP address or use the bundled Snap Server Manager (SSM) utility which runs a discovery routine on the network. The web interface is easy to navigate with a tidy row of tabbed folders across the top providing easy access to each function. The 410 is supplied preconfigured with a four disk RAID-5 array but you can delete this and create your own. Once an array has been created it can be split up into multiple volumes and each can have point-in time snapshots assigned although this is an optional feature. It'll also function as an FTP server and each protocol can be enabled or disabled individually for each network share. Storage usage can be controlled by implementing quotas on a per volume basis. These can be a simple default value applied to all users or they can be customised for each individual. General access security is good as along with local user and group lists the 410 supports NT and Active Directory domain authentication. Standard backup features on the basic 410 are limited so you'll need to upgrade using the optional features. The BakBone NetVault software option is expensive but the price does get you five client licenses and a free 500GB virtual tape library. The appliance only runs the NetVault Linux client so you need to install the server component on another system to manage it.

The small business NAS market is awash with compact appliances and if storage capacity and a low outlay are a high priority then desktop boxes such as those from Infrant Technologies, Buffalo Technologies or Thecus will probably do the job. However, for its quality list of business level features, good performance and extensive range of optional upgrades the Snap Server 410 is going to be a tough customer to beat. Overland Storage is the trusted global provider of effortless data management and data protection solutions across the data lifecycle. All trademarks and registered The information contained herein is subject to change without notice and is. The company has made Snap Servers since 2008; before that time, Snap Servers were produced by companies such as Adaptec, Quantum, and Meridian. One of the major draws of Snap Servers is their low-maintenance, dependable design. However, data recovery is still sometimes necessary when a redundant array fails due to several damaged drives, misconfiguration, or any of a number of other issues. We have provided data recovery on Snap Servers and appliances since 1998, and our engineers have worked with hundreds of the devices. Our recovery techniques on Snap Servers have revolutionized the data recovery industry, and most cases end in a full recovery of all missing or inaccessible data. Read more about our NAS recovery service here. When possible, our engineers use remote recovery techniques. This ensures minimal downtime, and no hard drives or hardware devices need to be shipped. In remote recovery cases, our engineers access your NAS, SAN, or RAID device on a bit level to clear data corruption and configuration issues that prevent normal operation. In most cases, the entire data recovery process is complete within a few hours, and you’ll simply need to remount the device to use it. Some instances require a data transfer and reinitialization of the server; in these cases, we will require an additional server or device to transfer the recovered data before initialization. Some cases cannot be recovered remotely, as a class 5 clean room is necessary when any hard drive recovery techniques are necessary. These are treated as priorities and emergencies to minimize downtime and get your server and data operating as quickly as possible.

Drives (usually not supporting hardware) will need to be shipped to one of our laboratories, where the damaged drives are repaired and cloned. The NAS or SAN is then rebuilt, and recovered data is backed up. By cloning the drives, we ensure that every method that we use for recovery is completely nondestructive and secure. Error Messages on Snap Servers The most common problematic error message on a Snap Server lists the date and time in the system log, followed by: ERROR Disk Driver: Cannot Read Device 80070000 Block 2081904. This error indicates a fatal flaw in one or more of the hard drives of the NAS. It does not, however, necessarily indicate that a hard drive has failed; corruption or electronic issues may be preventing the system from booting normally. Most NAS devices have built in redundancy, which means that failure of one hard drive is not in itself a serious issue as long as the drive is replaced quickly. However, if multiple hard drives fail or if other issues are preventing your data from being accessible, it’s very important to avoid any attempt to replace failed drives. Reinitializing a failed device, whether it’s a NAS, SAN, or RAID, can potentially overwrite data. Overwritten data is much more difficult to fully recover. You should immediately call a data recovery professional or Overland Storage customer service if you’ve seen a “Cannot Read Device” error message. Review your entire system log, and note anything unusual. The more information you’re able to gather about the failure, the better the chances of a fast, inexpensive, and full recovery. Our server engineers can discuss data recovery options and provide some guidance to help you get your Snap Server running in its normal operating condition. Contact an engineer at 1.800.237.4200. Data Recovery Tips for Snap Servers Regardless of whether you’ve got a SAN, NAS, or VTL RAID, it’s important to avoid overwriting any of the data on the device. As such, when multiple hard drives fail, you should avoid attempts to rebuild the server. Gather as much information as possible about symptoms leading up to the failure, as well as information about the server itself. Our engineers will need to know the file system and operating system of the device, its configuration, and a brief explanation of the failure. If you’re unable to gather any of this information, a trained server engineer can help you find out more before the data recovery process begins. Since 1979 Pinpoint The Data Center's Purpose A Clear Idea Of What You Want From Your Data Center Is Essential by Christian Perry There's no denying that planning for a data center is a tremendous task, whether you build your own, use a host, collocate, or even update your existing data center. Although you might be eager to jump head- first into details such as location, bandwidth, power cooling, and others, you shouldn't make a sin- gle move without determining the purpose of your center. Although data is naturally a pri- mary ingredient in any data center, it's certainly not the only ingredi- ent, and for some enterprises, it could even be the last ingredient considered. Sage Peachtree Complete Accounting 2011 Download on this page. According to Jay Hunter, an information systems consultant, it's crucial to remem- ber that other factors are always in the mix. 'It seems initially that data would drive the necessity to build or purchase space in a data center, but data is actually one of the last things to consider,' Hunter says. Take A Step Back As IT spending continues to increase, the urge to purchase quick and big can be tempting. You might get lucky with rash decisions in other areas, but because your data center will have a profound effect on your business, it's best to approach it with a hefty helping of strategy. Thanks to today's vastly varying hardware and services, data centers can and do widely differ, but you can accurately pinpoint your choices by stepping back and considering your needs. This can help determine an over- all strategy and purpose for your data center and ultimately keep it on track from its initial design stages to completion. For example, if your current facilities can no longer house the demands of the server equipment, your focus moving forward should be on building or choosing a data center that can sustain your data well into the future.

'A few years ago, housing servers within your company was a fairly trivial affair,' Hunter says. 'You plugged them in and paid someone to manage them. Not only is it expensive to pay a human being, with the taxes, vacation, health care, and other costs, but nobody really wants to perform the task any- way. Whether it is borne out of necessity, as personnel budgets are cut and remaining personnel are forced to pick up the slack, or you just want to offload mun- dane work, tasks that are repeti- tive in nature lend themselves easily to automated solutions. Take, for example, the auto- mation of tape backup. As the amount of data stored on corporate servers grew expo- nentially, it quickly exceeded the capacity of the available storage tapes. Initially, that meant having a technical sup- port person babysit the backup process and swap the tapes when one became full. Vendors quickly filled this need with Innovation and new technology are bound to continue to develop new ways to automate tasks that humans currently do. Automated tape libraries that house multiple tapes and swap the tapes themselves, so the backup can be accomplished without human intervention. Products such as OpalisRobot from Opalis can be used to auto- mate a variety of IT processes and increase efficiency and pro- ductivity. Through workflow, scripting, event-based manage- ment, and integration between popular systems management products, OpalisRobot and pro- ducts like it can effectively handle mundane and tedious repetitive tasks. However most of the cameras used in surveillance are still based on a 60 year old analogue TV standard producing video that creates low quality images (0.4 megapixels) or lacks detail in the objects of interest. Additionally, most cameras are still tethered to coaxial cables, using midspan devices that concentrate a number of local cameras and long-haul the video over a single line to be recorded on a server, making installation more difficult and costly. The evolution of cameras has introduced two new technologies to the surveillance market highresolution (megapixel) cameras and IP cameras (transmitting camera video over Ethernet networks). Camera manufacturers are introducing cost-effective high resolution digital cameras for surveillance solutions because of the growing importance of the quality of the images at both close range and at a distance. For instance, if the goal of the surveillance project was to be able to read details like license plates or to distinguish objects at distances, high resolution cameras are the best choice. The introduction of IP cameras that can connect to existing Ethernet networks has provided additional flexibility and scalability, and has reduced the cost of deployment. MOBOTIX has produced a versatile line of high resolution cameras that bring video surveillance to higher level, providing megapixel resolution (1024 x 768, 1280 x 960, and 2048 x 1536) video streams with audio and scalable frame rates.

MOBOTIX cameras store these high resolution images more efficiently than other high resolution cameras, therefore requiring fewer network resources. High resolution images can place a heavy demand on the network storage device required to process multiple camera streams and deliver the storage capacity and protection required for these images. When sizing any video surveillance application, there is always a tradeoff between the quality of the video, how long to store it, and the amount of storage required. With IP cameras, handling multiple camera streams over the network requires a recording server that can support multiple camera streams, since dropped frames would produce unacceptable results. Recent testing of Adaptec Snap Server storage systems in the MOBOTIX Camera Lab has shown Snap Servers to be an ideal storage solution for handling the demands from up to 40 simultaneous high resolution camera streams. Snap Servers have a long history of being easy to manage, providing rock-solid reliability and offering a variety of integrated redundancy features. Snap Servers require fewer IT skills to manage, are more reliable, have a lower acquisition cost, and have a lower long-term cost of ownership than comparable general purpose PCs. This paper will discuss key considerations and set up points for configuring a Snap Server as the IP video storage archive on the network; configuring MOBOTIX Cameras to record to the Snap Server; and how to configure the MOBOTIX MxControlCenter software to access and search the video archives stored on the Snap Server. This paper will also discuss how to replicate files using Snap Enterprise Data Replicator (Snap EDR). Snap EDR is a secure WAN-tolerant network replication suite that can transmit video files to one or more Snap Servers, providing tiered archiving and added backup redundancy.
