But if on-board SB850 raid was enabled, this card could not post. From what i could gather after a couple days of searching, it is a BIOS ROM access issue. And the card's BIOS options where not broad enough to alleviate this issue. New Egg came thru. As a merchant they retain a perfect 10 for every transaction I have ever had with them. My bad for jumping the gunI do feel vendors are entitled to restocking fees on hardware that is not defective. Newegg indicated to me that they have no way of knowing if a part is truly bad until it reaches the vendor. I would not object to a delay while an evaluation is made. That Newegg is the middle man in the transaction is really just the cost of doing business. So I beleive its incumbent on NewEgg to negotiate the restocking fee with the manufacturer. New Egg did NOT charge me for shipping which I think is going above and beyond what is required of them. I was ready to eat the shipping fee. Newegg picked that up. So I give New Egg an 11 for this transaction. I will continue to recommend them as the first place to turn for electronic products in general and computer stuff in particular. Great work Newegg! It even comes with SATA cablesThis card does add 20 seconds to POST times as it initializes and detects hard drives.I set up a raid 1 with 2 samsung 2Tb HDD. It took over 12 hours for the program to complete this process. Next step change bios to have CD boot first. This step went without incident. This step requires a floppy disk (who has one of those any more). Buy FDD. Run boot CD Linux starts, and then the program can no longer find CD drive. Decide to skip that step. Moved to driver install in window since this is not going to be a boot drive. Back to step one.Blue Screen. That has been my experience so far. I hope it helps someone, and if you find a solution. Please post.I don't know what happened with this one. Buyer beware, this one will disappoint. Newegg on the other hand was great!!! I may not buy Adaptec again, but I will shop with newegg.Guess it was intended to be used with a less capable chipset. See cons.If the on-board SB850 raid was disabled, this card would boot I would be able to setup arrays and change what few settings existed.

CyberDyneSystems 5.0 out of 5 stars Sorry!) with real hardware RAID is pretty compelling. I am using it as of now for a 4 disk RAID 10 array. The arrays sequential read and write times are coming in close to modern SSD performance (in the same Machine I have two Samsung 850 Pro) and this is with relatively slow 5900 RPM Seagate NAS drives. This these leaves me future external capacity for another 4 disk array. I can walk away form the PC and come back in the morning with the entire thing shut down. No fans or hard drives spinning, no blinky lights. Silence. Press a button on the keyboard and I am back in windows Pro in seconds all ready to go.

Coming from the era of Adaptec Ultra Wide SCSI RAID controller, this is nothing short of miraculous to me:) Time was when you installed a card like this one had to use the cards own utilities to control disk power down etc.CONS: Unlike the advances they have made in behaving with the OS in having functional power savings, the boot up sequence is even worse than the old days of SCSI! (if that's possible) This card takes longer to initiate than my entire system took to boot to Windows prompt before the card was installed. You can't see then form anywhere unless you happen to be the Nvidia sitting below it. Anyone that is looking for a good fast RAID card that can work with a lot of disks, this is a good option in a low price point.Good HW RAID card that doesn't cost a ton of money, and is much better than the cheap fake-raid cards that impact system performance.Highly recommended if you're looking for an actual hardware RAID card. You can do this in the BIOS or in the software (which you can download from Adaptec's website). Not for the faint of heart though regarding getting everything setup and configured properly. Overall though, it does deliver.Let me start by making it clear that I am not posting to trash the 6805E. Everything that I experienced leads me to believe that the 6805E would be EXCELLENT at driving a large array where all disks are mechanical HDDs. However, I bought the 6805E based on the manufacturer's advertising regarding its Hybrid RAID feature, which is a RAID10 array of two SSDs and two relatively inexpensive HDDs. The idea is to have the performance of a RAID0 of the SSDs but with redundancy to protect against the loss of any one of the four drives. I had expected the 6805E's PCI-e x4 connection and onboard cache to deliver better IOPS than just connecting my Crucial SSDs directly to the motherboard.

The effective transfer rate is doubled when 16-bit data transfer is used because the data path for wide SCSI is twice the size of normal 8-bit SCSI. Enabling disconnection allows the host adapter to perform other operations on the SCSI bus while the SCSI device is temporarily disconnected. The default setting is Yes. This optimizes SCSI bus performance. If only one SCSI device is connected to the host adapter, set Enable Disconnection to No to achieve slightly better performance. The default is Yes. When this option is set to No, the devices are allowed to start at the same time. Most devices require you to set a jumper before they can respond to this command. These values are set by Dell, and changing them may cause conflicts with the SCSI devices. The default is Enabled. The default setting is Enabled. If this setting is disabled, you can still run the SCSI Select utility by pressing after the host adapter BIOS banner appears. The default setting is Enabled. All data is erased To support hard drives larger than 1 GB, the 78 xx series host adapters include an extended translation scheme that supports hard drives as large as 8 GB, with a maximum partition size of 2 GB under the DOS operating system. Because the cylinder size increases to 8 MB under extended translation, the partition size you choose must be a multiple of 8 MB. If you request a size that is not a multiple of 8 MB, fdisk rounds up to the nearest whole multiple of 8 MB. The default is Verbose. The default setting is Enabled. You should disable the host adapter BIOS if the peripherals on the SCSI bus (for example, CD-ROM drives) are all controlled by device drivers and do not need the BIOS. After determining the speed that a target device is capable of, the host adapter sends a Write Buffer command to the target device. The data transfer occurs at the full speed initially. The initiator reads and tests the data and identifies any parity or cyclic redundancy check (CRC) errors.

Configuring SCSI. DriversEach channel of the AIC-7899 supports up to eight internal SCSI hard drives via SCSI backplane boards. If you are using an optional RAID controller, see your RAID controller documentation for information on installing your SCSI device drivers. After the SCSI devices are installed, install and configure any SCSI device drivers to enable them to communicate with your operating system. For instructions on configuring the SCSI device drivers, see the documentation that came with your operating system. You may also need to use the SCSI Select utility, discussed in this section. SCSI Select also contains SCSI disk utilities that let you low-level format or verify the disk media of your SCSI hard drives. Starting the SCSI Select Utility To select an option, press the up- and down-arrow keys to move the cursor to the option; then press. In some cases, selecting an option displays another menu. You can return to the previous menu at any time by pressing. To restore the original SCSI Select default values, press. SCSI Select Default SettingsThese default settings are appropriate for most PCI systems. Run SCSI Select only if you need to change any of the default settings. Dell recommends that you leave the host adapter set to SCSI ID 7. The default setting is Enabled. You should disable SCSI Parity Checking if any SCSI device connected to the host adapter does not support SCSI parity; otherwise, leave it enabled. Most SCSI devices support SCSI parity. If you are unsure whether a device supports SCSI parity, consult the documentation for the device. The default setting for the AIC-7899 host adapter is Enabled or Automatic. Dell recommends that you leave this option set to the default. The default setting is LUN 0. The default is Yes. For these devices, set Initiate Wide. Negotiation to No.When this option is set to No, 8-bit data transfer is used unless the SCSI device itself requests wide negotiation.

Format A command line function can consist of two parameters. Example: -cfg filename.cfg. Invalid parameters cause an error message and the program to exit. The -p and flags can be used in conjunction with any of the other options. Each area represents one sensor for each instrumented device in the server. If the given display function fails because of an inability to parse the data present or a hardware failure, the utility displays an error message and exits. The utility loads the specified CFG file and uses the entries in that file to probe the hardware and to select the proper SDRs to load into nonvolatile storage. The utility executes commands formed by the strings present in the configuration file. These commands cause the utility to run tasks needed to load the proper SDRs into the nonvolatile storage of the BMC and possibly generic FRU devices. Some of the commands may be interactive and require you to make a choice. These records might need to be filtered based on the current product configuration. The configuration file directs the filtering of the SDRs. Before programming, the utility clears the SDR repository area. The utility filters all tagged SDRs depending on the product configuration set in the configuration file. Non-tagged SDRs are automatically programmed. The utility also copies all written SDRs to the SDR.TMP file; it contains an image of what was loaded. The TMP file is also useful for debugging the server.

You can run Setup with or without an operating system being present. Setup stores most of the configuration values in battery-backed CMOS; the rest of the values are stored in flash memory. The values take effect when the system is booted. POST uses these values to configure the hardware; if the values and the actual hardware do not agree, POST generates an error message. You must then run Setup to specify the correct configuration. Menus Setup menus and submenus. You can use different-sized disk drives in the array, but the array will be limited to the capacity of the smallest and slowest disk drive. Alternatively, you can complete a standard installation, where the controller driver is installed on an existing operating system. Installing the Controller This section describes how to install your Adaptec RAID controller into your computer cabinet. Adaptec RAID controllers come in two basic configurations: standard and zero maintenance cache protection with batteryless backup. The battery module can overheat and may even explode. Turn off your computer and disconnect the power cord. Open the cabinet, following the manufacturer’s instructions. See more information. Note: Although you can connect both SAS and SATA disk drives to your SAS controller, Adaptec recommends that you not combine SAS and SATA disk drives within the same array or logical drive. See page 68 for more information. Install your Adaptec MaxIQ SSDs in your server. For servers with a standard 2.5-inch drive tray, install the SSD directly into the tray. Adaptec recommends using only Adaptec cables. For more information or to purchase cables, visit the Adaptec Web site at www.adaptec.com. Next Steps. Note: If you are completing a standard installation onto an existing operating system, you don’t have to complete this task. Adaptec Storage Manager generates a warning if you try to create a logical drive using a combination of SAS and SATA disk drives. See Creating an Array with the ACU The ACU is menu-based and instructions for completing tasks appear on-screen. Select at least three disk drives for the array, press Insert for each selected disk drive, then press Enter. Caution: During initialization, all data is deleted from the disk. Before continuing, back up any data you want to keep. Press Y, then press Enter. Note: You will need the Adaptec RAID Controller Installation DVD to complete this task.

It also describes the options you have for installing your Adaptec controller and disk drives, and creating arrays for data storage. Note: Before you begin, familiarize yourself with your Adaptec controller’s physical features and the RAID levels that it supports (see RAID 0 (Non-redundant Array)—Stripes data across multiple disk drives. When selecting disk drives for your RAID array, ensure that all the disk drives have the same performance level.

63 Recovering from a Disk Drive Failure. 64 Resetting the Controller. 65 This chapter provides basic troubleshooting information and solutions for solving controller problems. When you blink a specific disk drive or set of disk drives, the LED(s) on the selected disk drives flash. Then, if necessary, use Adaptec Storage Manager to rebuild the array. For instructions, refer to the Adaptec Storage Manager User’s Guide or online Help. Resetting the Controller This section explains how to reset (or Mode 0 flash) your Adaptec RAID controller. You may want to do this if the controller becomes inoperable, or if a firmware upgrade is unsuccessful. Terminology Used in This Chapter. 68 What is SAS?. 68 How Do SAS Devices Communicate?. 69 What’s a Phy?. 69 What’s a SAS Port?. 70 What’s a SAS Address?. 70 What’s a SAS Connector?. The difference in performance between the two types of disk drives may adversely affect the performance of the array. SAS devices communicate with each other through links. A link is a physical connection between two phys. As shown in the following figure, SAS devices contain ports (see and each phy contains one transmitter and one receiver—one transceiver. A phy can belong to one port only. A port is one or more phys. Once you have connected to a backplane, use Adaptec Storage Manager to manage your disk drives. For more information, refer to the Adaptec Storage Manager User’s Guide on the RAID Controller Installation DVD. For example, you can daisy-chain (connect one to the next) up to nine Adaptec S50 enclosures to a single SAS card in a host system. SAS Expander Connections A SAS expander device literally expands the number of end devices that you can connect together. In summary, although SAS and parallel SCSI both use the SCSI command set, how they move data from one place to another is very different. To support point-to-point serial data transport, SAS introduces new types of connectors, cables, connection options, and terminology.

To create a RAID 5 array: Insert the Adaptec RAID Controller Installation DVD into your DVD drive, then restart your computer. Installing with Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP To install the Adaptec RAID controller driver while installing Windows: Insert your Windows CD, then restart the computer. Follow the on-screen instructions to begin the Windows installation. To install the Adaptec RAID controller driver while installing Red Hat Linux: Insert the first Red Hat Installation CD. Restart your computer. Complete the OpenServer installation, following the instructions included with your operating system. Continue with Managing Your Storage Space on page Installing with UnixWare Note: You will need your UnixWare Installation CD to complete this task. To install the driver when installing UnixWare: Insert the UnixWare Installation CD. Note: Currently, the Adaptec Storage Manager GUI is not supported on VMware. To create and manage arrays, you must connect to the VMware machine from a remote GUI or use the ARCCONF utility. Note: To install the driver while you’re installing an operating system, see page. You must also create a driver disk before you begin installing the controller driver. Installing on Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP To install the driver on Windows: Start or restart Windows. The Found New Hardware Wizard opens and searches for the driver. Check for any pre-existing Adaptec driver by performing a window. If there is no pre-existing Adaptec driver on your computer, continue with If an Adaptec driver is already installed on your computer, perform a remove it. Note: Currently, the Adaptec Storage Manager GUI is not supported on VMware. To create and manage arrays, you must connect to the VMware machine from a remote GUI or use the ARCCONF utility. With Adaptec Storage Manager, you can group disk drives into logical drives and build in redundancy to protect your data and improve system performance. The other required array definition keywords are Drives and Type. Array definition keywords and descriptions are listed in this table. Keyword Required? Description Array. HotspareDrives Keyword Hotspare Drives is an optional keyword, specifying the hot spares to assign to the array. The syntax for listing hot spares is the same as the not specified, no hot spares are assigned to the array. There is no default value. The possible values: Volume, RAID0, RAID1, RAID5, RAID10, or RAID50. Depending on the RAID levels supported by your RAID controller, additional possible values are: RAID1E, RAID5EE, RAID6, RAID60. No drives detected. Specified drive not found in system. Specified array size too small—You specified an array size that is smaller than the minimum size allowed for this array. The flash image may comprise multiple User Flash Image (UFI) files.Check that the.ufi file is the correct file for your controller before copying. If using floppy disks, copy each additional Axxxx0x.ufi file to a separate floppy disk. (Some RAID controllers have two UFI files;. Environmental Specifications. 130 DC Power Requirements. 130 Current Requirements. 130. The recommended airflow is 200 LFM. Forced airflow is recommended.

A disk drive can include both RAID segments (segments that are part of an array) and available segments. Compared to independent disk drives, RAID 1 arrays provide improved performance, with twice the read rate and an equal write rate of single disks. Data in a RAID 10 array is both striped and mirrored. Mirroring provides data protection, and striping improves performance. Drive segment size is limited to the size of the smallest disk drive in the array. For instance, an array with two 250 GB disk drives and two 400 GB disk drives can create two mirrored drive segments of 250 GB, for a total of 500 GB for the array, as shown in this figure. Parity data provides data protection, and striping improves performance. Parity data is an error-correcting redundancy that’s used to re-create data if a disk drive fails. In RAID 5 arrays, parity data (represented by Ps in the next figure) is striped evenly across the disk drives with the stored data. Unlike a hot spare, a distributed spare is striped evenly across the disk drives with the stored data and parity data, and can’t be shared with other logical disk drives. However, RAID 6 arrays include two independent sets of parity data instead of one. Both sets of parity data are striped separately across all disk drives in the array. RAID Level Redundancy RAID 0. Start or restart your computer. This is an optional setting. Note: Power Off Drive After duration should be greater than Slow Down Drive After Duration. To begin a secure erase, select Secure Erase from the main ACU menu, then select Y (yes). To return to the main ACU menu once the secure erase has begun, press Esc. Modifying Your Controller’s Configuration Note: Default controller settings are suitable for most computers. Adaptec recommends that you do not change the default setting. To modify your controller’s basic settings, select Controller Configuration from the main SerialSelect menu. Displaying the disk drives adds a few seconds to the overall POST time.
