This is really some sort of disappointment for this computer but so it is: you can't get perfect computer for every user. This chapter is an important guide to the rest of the documentation and provides a summary of the installation process. Use of SCSI devices older than Ultra 2 is not suggested. Older devices will. Useful only if a native OS's file system resides on the array.The default is TRUE, which means the command turns on the container verify feature.The default is FALSE.If TRUE, logging of SMART exception reports is enabled. All data is erased and cannot be recovered. If TRUE, bad blocks are automatically repaired, if possible. Otherwise, the RAID tends to be limited in capacity and performance to that of the smallest and slowest drive. Simple Volume A simple volume consists of a single drive.The drives do not have to be of equal capacity and are connected end-to-end.

If your computer is booted to a Windows operating system and you insert the Adaptec SCSI RAID Installation CD in the drive, your computer automatically reads the CD if it is set up to do so. If your computer does not automatically read the CD, you can prompt it to read the CD by clicking on autorun.exe from the root directory,. These applications enable you to view the Portable Document Format (PDF) files on the Adaptec SCSI RAID Installation CD. Acrobat Reader is also available from Adobe as a free download. The Adaptec SCSI RAID controllers may be used in LVD mode or SE mode. To operate at their maximum designed rate, LVD devices must be connected only with LVD devices on a channel. The Adaptec SCSI RAID controller is set to ID 7 by default (most SCSI controllers use ID 7). SCSI IDs can only be duplicated on the same controller if the devices using the same ID are not attached to the same controller channel. SCSI termination for Adaptec SCSI RAID controllers is configured through ARC. External Wide SCSI If using cables with attached mutimode terminators, as in the cable supplied, configure controller termination to auto unless both internal and external connectors are being used on that channel. The default setting of the controller and system BIOS Setup usually will allow you to install and boot from either a hard disk drive connected to the motherboard, or from a drive or array connected to the controller.

Details will not be offered, and optional parameters or selections along the way will not be explored. Selected drives will be displayed in the box on the right side of the display. A pop-up window appears, notifying you that the system is creating the array in hardware. When it disappears, the display will refresh. First, create any driver disk(s) you will be needing by following the instructions in the next section. If a failure occurs, the controller checks the spare pool for a spare drive with sufficient space for one or more arrays on the failing drive. The drives you just added appear in the Selected Drives list and will be used in the event of a drive failure. Click Remove. The drives are removed from the Selected Drives list and now appear in the Available Drives list. Click OK. Consider using these array types only for noncritical data that does not change often and that can be easily restored from backups. SCSI ID—Identifies the drive on the SCSI channel. Logical Unit Number (LUN)—The number assigned to a subdevice (logical unit) of a SCSI device, which is usually zero for a disk drive. The Format command performs a low-level format on the specified disk drive and makes a drive available for use in an array. The Storage Manager Pro Format command differs from an operating system (OS) format in that this command completely removes all information and does not include any OS-specific information. This includes terminating a Format task, restarting your system, or shutting down your system while a Format task is in progress. Doing so can result in a damaged disk drive.

See Setting Up Remote Access for the First Time on page 4-4. Click New User. Changing User Accounts You can change user accounts only if you have an administrator account. See Understanding User Accounts on page 5-1. You cannot change an account from global to local or from local to global. Field Description Login Name You cannot change the login name. Event Notification allows you to designate multiple recipients to receive an e-mail or an e-mail pager message when an event, such as failover, occurs. Edit Ability indicates you can make changes to the notification properties; Read- Only Access indicates you can view the properties, but cannot make any changes.
